Compounding
Creative solutions for difficult problems.

More and more people have unique health needs that mass-produced prescription medicines cannot meet. For them, customized, compounded medications prescribed by their physicians and expertly mixed by trained, licensed compounding pharmacists are a viable alternative.

Physicians often prescribe compounded medications for reasons that include:

  • The patient is allergic or sensitive to certain preservatives, dyes or binders in available standard medications;
  • Treatment requires special dosage strengths for patients with unique needs unavailable in commercially available products;
  • Medications require flavor additives to make them more palatable for some patients, most often children.
  • For patients who are having a difficult time swallowing a capsule, a compounding pharmacist can make a suspension as an alternative.
  • Medication requires unique delivery system, such as a sublingual troche (lozenge), transdermal gel, or suppository.

Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing customized medications for patients. Modern technology, innovative techniques, and research have allowed more pharmacists to customize medications to meet specific patient needs. Compounding has been part of healthcare since the origins of pharmacy, and is used widely today in all areas of the industry, from hospitals to nuclear medicine.

Over the last decade, the resurgence of compounding has largely benefited from advances in technology, quality control and research methodology. The Food and Drug Administration has stated that compounded prescriptions are both ethical and legal as long as they are prescribed by a licensed practitioner for a specific patient and compounded by a licensed pharmacy. In addition, compounding is regulated by state boards of pharmacy.
